Not Novels In Verse

April is National Poetry Month, which means we are all talking about poetry books, especially Young Adult Novels In Verse. As author of a lovely YA novel that incorporates poetry, I want to add several titles to the National Poetry Month conversation— books that are not novels in verse, but poetry is in there.

In my novel, Finding Jupiter, the main character is creating blackout poetry from the pages of classic novels including The Great Gatsby and Their Eyes Were Watching God. Her journal pages are included in the novel. In Jeff Zetner’s In The Wild Light, the main character takes a poetry class and discovers a gift. In Vinyl Moon by the incredible Mahogany Browne, poetry is. intersperced throughout the novel as a storytelling device. The Main character in I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, the main character is working on a poem and shares it with her therapist. In We Are All So Good At Smiling by Amber McBride, characters connect through poetry— this one is a verse novel but it’s too magical, literally to leave off this list. The Sky Is Everywhere is similar to Finding Jupiter— poetry is literally “found” on scraps of paper that appear throughout the novel. All the books pictured here reinforce what the huge YA novel in verse genre already tells us— poetry and YA novels go together like Netflix and chill. Either one is great solo, but together? Whether you’re doing more Netflixing or more chilling, you’re loving it.

Are there any Young Adult Novels that incorporate poetry that I’ve left off this post?

National Poetry Month happens every single April— I’ll keep expanding this post with y’all’s additions!
